Extensive exterior and interior renovations update this classic 1960s ranch-style home, located on Sarasota’s Bird Key, to transform the house into a relaxing oasis that is defined by contemporary style and functionality. Throughout the renovation process, design professionals worked closely with the client to achieve a finished home that features clean and simple lines, open spaces, and a dynamic connection with the outdoor environment.
The exterior design concept modernizes the home with the removal of the existing driveway, and the creation of a functional and attractive entry space. Fresh landscape design and architectural elements provide privacy while allowing natural sunlight to cascade around the home, where tropical flora thrives. The removal of the original home’s constrictive, screened pool cage and the inclusion of an open-air dining space invites unfiltered Florida living and leisure in the spacious, secluded backyard.
The interior renovation is inspired by clean lines, natural materials, and a desire for better light and more open space. Throughout the original home, low ceilings and poor lighting detracted from living appeal and functionality. The complete spatial reconfiguration features a more open floor plan that maximizes the connection between the kitchen, dining and living room spaces. In addition to opening up the floor plan, the remodel introduces several design elements that bathe rooms in natural sunlight, through skylights, windows, light finish materials, and glass panels.
The renovated kitchen was renewed with walnut cabinets that are highlighted by white shaker cabinets and countertops, and accented with the sleek, modern aesthetic of stainless steel appliances. All three bathrooms in the home were also completely reconfigured utilizing sleek, timeless fixtures, natural materials and frosted glass accents. The revamped bedrooms, which include new wardrobe units and built-ins, are illuminated in the daytime by bright, natural light.
The new living room, a space designed for relaxation and modern recreation, is anchored with an elegant built-in cabinet and reading nook featuring a warm backdrop of walnut paneling. The room is awash with natural light, which gleams from the overhead skylight and through French glass doors that open into the lushly-landscaped, private backyard.
This modern hideaway maintains the integrity of its original ranch house style, but with a contemporary twist. The traditionally-open ranch house floor plan is further aerified and more thoroughly-lit, and the home’s classic long lines accentuated by contemporary landscape design and architecture. The result is a tropical retreat with modern amenities and cosmopolitan sensibilities--a private slice of paradise.
